a)  Why was there such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales?

b)  Name another example shared in the video that shows how two variables can have a strong correlation but not causation.

Comments

  1. a) Why was there such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales?
    - There was a strong relationship because when they plotted the numbers in a chart, they had a strong positive correlation from it.

    b) Name another example shared in the video that shows how two variables can have a strong correlation but not causation.
    - For example, female bankers and financial crisis can have a strong correlation because it is happening.

    A) There is a strong relationship between drownings and ice cream sales because of the sunny weather. In sunny weather, people are hot so they want to swim and eat ice cream.
    B) Another example is the thought that married men live longer than single men. This is not true. However, it is proven that healthier men are more likely to get married.

There was a strong relationship Because of the sales of the ice cream and the amount of people swimming and drowneding durring a hot season.

Another example of variables that can have strong correlation but not causation is that students who have more/higher confidence levels will do better in school and the students that don't tend to fail. The answer to that is not all students that have good confidence will pass and not all students that have bad confidence will fail.

  4. 1. There was such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because every year it gets hot and people go out and buy ice cream and every year it gets hot and people go out to swim and unfortunately drown.

    2. One other example of correlation and causation is the number of kids becoming short sided because of the light being produced at night and number of kids being normal because of the light being off. This was incorrect later done by a researcher being that the parents are probably short sided making the kids short sided.

    A) as the climate gets higher people like to go out to the beach and like to by ice cream, the numbers have a strong relationship because those are the most common things that occur in the summer

    B) Another example is men with high life expectancy are most likely to get married

There is a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because when it is warm outside people swim and go out for ice cream more.
Also parents that let infants go to sleep in the dark can make you kid challenged

  7. A) There was a strong correlation because the amount of ice cream sold depends on the weather and so does the amount of drownings because people swim when its hot out they also eat ice cream when its hot.
B). Men who have a long expected life rate and who are rich are more likely to live than man who are poor and unhealthy and might have a short life span.

    1. There was a strong relationship between drownings and ice cream sales because hot weather causes swimming and ice cream sales. When it's nice out more people go swimming and unfortunately drownings increase. When it's nice ou more people eat ice cream so ice cream sales increase.

    2. Another example is that Married men live longer than single men. However men that are rich and healthy have a higher life expectancy and are more likely to get married.

    1. There's such a strong relationship there of the weather. When the weather is nice more people tend to go out to swim and get ice cream which causes casualties.

    2. Married men live longer then single men

There was such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because of the weather that occurs during the two and not actually because ice cream causes drownings. Both ice cream sales and drownings both occur in the summer due to the heat.

Another example of how two variables can have a strong correlation but not causation is leaving the lights on during a child's rest causing nearsightedness. Each set of data seemed to appear to lead to one another but were just a coincidence when realizing that being nearsighted was hereditary.

    a) there was a strong relationship between the number of drowning and ice cream sales because they related with the examples she gave. One example was a female bank worker and a financial crisis.

    b) An example she gave was a female banker and a financial crisis. They relate somehow but you have to know how. She also stated single men have a shorter life expectancy than a married man.

  15. There is a strong relationship between drownings and ice cream sales because people drown just as much as people buy ice cream.
Another example is that married men live longer than single men. Marrying is healthier for men.

A.) Because if the weather is nice more people go swimming and buy ice cream.
B.)Married men live long longer than single men
Young kids who sleep with the lights on are more likely to be shortsighted
Kids who get good grades in school and kids who have high self-esteem

  17. 1. There is a strong relationship because there is a lot of people who drown and there is a lot of people who eat ice cream .
    2. Another example from the video is when she was talking about how kids with high selfasteem do better in school and kids who do their work.

There was a strong relationship with drowning and ice. Cream because when it is a hot day people go out to buy ice cream them they maybe go to the beach then "drown" thats why she used that as an example

Another example shared in the video that shows how two variables can have a strong correlation but not a casuation is married man live longer than a single man, a single man live shoter that a married man

  19. a) there was such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because when ice cream sales increesed growing increased at the same time. they were also t the same weather. people swim in summer and eat ice cream.

    b) another example was married men live longer then single men. the correlation is rich healthy men get more expected to get married

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. There was such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales. An underlying factor takes place which is the nice weather. Due to the nice weather, more people will go out to swim and drown. On another note with the nice weather, more people will buy ice cream.

    2. In 1999, a research was done which showed that when young kids slept with the light on, they became short sighted later on in life. The researchers found the correlation but no one knew about how the casual relation might take place. With this, researchers advised parents to turn off all lights at night. Short sightedness only comes genetically so researchers were wrong about this. This is how two variables can have such a strong correlation but not causation. The variables can make sense, but that doesn't mean it's absolutely correct. You'd have to know how and why it works and if it does.

  21. There was a strong relationship cause when it's hot more more people go swimming which lead to people drowning and when is hot they eat ice cream

Another example is when she says the married people live longer it cause people who have longer life Expectancy and more my get my married more often

a.The reason why there such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because there both major things that happen to people which relates to causation and correlation.

    b. Another example shared in the video thay shows how two variables can have a strong correlation but not causation is kids who do well in school get higher grades and kids with self esteem.

  24. 1 Days with the most sales of ice cream also see the most people ... cases the relationship between the variables is a very strong one. ... this bill would not decrease the number of drowning deaths.
2 A positive correlation is a relationship between two variables such that their values increase or decrease ... However, correlation does not imply causation.

  25. Briah Singleton

    A) There was a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because the underlying factor is nice weather. When the weather is nice children want ice cream and to go swimming this makes the connection.

    B) Married men live longer than single men

    ReplyDelete
  26. A. There is such a strong correlation because if the weather is noce, more people will go out and buy icecream at the beach, and drown. It isn't actually the icecream causing the drownings.

    B. Another example of how two variables can have strong correlation but not causation is how kids get better grades when their self esteem is high. They then made another study and found that it could be the other way around, how higher self esteem would cause good grades.

  27. 1. There is such a strong relationship between ice creams sold and number of drownings because due to the major heat caused by wether many people go the the pool and also buy ice cream just as much.
    2. Another example she made was how one might infer that married men live longer than single men which is not entirely true that could just be the theory of how one feels on there love life.

  32. 1.) There was such a strong relationship between the number of drownings and ice cream sales because the ice cream is making people drown.
2.) Correlation is just a linear association between two variables, meaning that as one variable rises or falls, the other variable rises or falls as well.

Days with the most sales of ice cream also see the most people drown.” that is just because one variable is statistically associated to another, it doesn’t mean that one is the cause of the other.More ice cream is sold on hot summer days than snowy winter ones. More people swim in the summer, and hence more drown in the summer than in the winter.

    1. The relationship was strong because ice cream sales and drownings had a strong correlation but not causation.
    2. Another example shared in the video was that men live longer when not married. Then when not married men lives less.

  37. Aa) Because of ice cream usually being sold in the summer and people usually going swimming in the summer there is a uptrending reaction showing that both drowning and ice cream being sold happens more often during this underline factor.

Ba) "Young kids who sleep with the lights on have a much higher probability of becoming short-sighted later in life" is another example she gave in the video. Because light has to do with sight and babies are developing quickly there is a correlation, however, theres no causation because short-sightedness is caused by genetics.

  38. a)One day at lunch I was eating a large bowl of ice cream, and a fellow faculty member said, “You had better be careful, there is a high statistical correlation between ice cream and drowning.” I must have given him a confused look, as he elaborated some more.

b)Correlation is expressed on a range from +1 to -1, known as the correlation coefficent. In a perfect positive correlation, expressed as +1, an increase or decrease in one variable always predicts the same directional change for the second variable
